Help the Sailing Team Buy a Safety Boat and Equipment
The Embry-Riddle Sailing Team is a club sport and recreational sailing club. We are a passionate group of students driven by our love for sailing and the water. In 2016 and 2017, our club and fleet were badly damaged by hurricanes Matthew and Irma. Our club lost two boats from our fleet, and our sailing facility was completely destroyed.
In mid-2018 our sailing facility had rebuilt many of their facilities but our club struggled to regain a foothold. Our now -decimated fleet and limited resources made it extremely difficult for our club to recover. Come early 2019, our club began rebuilding a sailing team and returned to competition in the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association in the Spring 2019 season. After a successful first season, our team was awarded funding from our university to purchase a new fleet of boats. Over the course of six months we brokered a deal for six Laser Performance FJ sailboats, tripling the size of our fleet and satisfying and overwhelming interest in sailing at our club.
In Fall of 2019 our team came back with a vengeance, doubling the size of our sailing team and tripling our overall club membership. Our new fleet of FJs hit the water in October, replacing an aging 25-year-old fleet and, for the first time, bringing our fleet on par with other college sailing teams.
Over the past year our team has built up incredible momentum, growing and expanding each semester. We believe now, more than ever, is the time to heavily invest in the future of our club with new facilities, equipment, and boats. It is time to take our team to the next level and solidify our future as a competitive college sailing program.
In order to achieve this, we need to complete the following necessary investments:
- Purchase a Team Safety/Coach Boat
- Install new floating docks and pilings
- Acquire a boat lift for ease of access to a Safety Boat
- Purchase new practice and racing sails for our fleet
Sailing is one of the most expensive sports in the world, the costs associated with running a sailing program and sustaining a collegiate team can be immense. Team members pay dues each semester to pay for costs associated with maintaining our club. Your support of this crowdfunding campaign will allow us to cover the cost of some of the large investments listed above as well as the costs associated with sustaining our team and maintaining our fleet.
Important Equipment You Will Pay For:
Team Uniforms, Travel Costs:
Every donation made makes a huge difference in covering recurring costs for our team. Each semester we travel to as many as six regattas all across the south. Our team members pay for hotels and travel costs out of pocket. These travel costs discourage team mates from competing and can be expensive for our team. Other items such as team uniforms are also items that students pay for themselves.
Currently our club does not own a safety boat or any motorboat for that matter. When sailors are on the water they are on their own and cannot get assistance in the case of an emergency. Additionally, our team cannot instruct sailors on the water or do simple things like drop marks for a race course. Sailors currently carry the marks out on their sailboats and drop them, making it much harder to set a course.
With the purchase of a safety boat, it is also important to have a boat lift on our facility dock. This allows easy access for students to put the safety boat in the water without a trailer or truck. In the case of an emergency, students can also have the safety boat lowered into the water in a matter of minutes. This is an important piece of equipment because our facility's ramp is not suitable for launching trailered boats.
Our club currently does not own any floating docks or dock space in general. All boats are stored on land and must be launched each time they are being used. A floating dock would allow us to launch boats faster and save time during practices and races.
Currently our team owns one set of sails for our boats. This would be fine, however the sails are 11 years old and far beyond their usable life. We need to replace our sails with new race sets as well as practice sets. This will allow our team to be more competitive in local regattas and ensure our team is practicing with sound equipment.
