Endowment of the Sigma Chi Symons & Tomai Memorial Scholarship

December 13, 2019

Family, Friends, and Sigma Chi Brothers,

WE DID IT!  Thanks to your generosity over the last four years, the scholarship has officially entered into an endowed status.  This means that your donations will serve into the foreseeable future to honor Chris Symons and Michael Tomai by providing scholarships to undergraduate Sigma Chi members pursuing their education at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona.

Due to the nature of the endowment, it will require two years for the scholarship to earn enough equity to begin providing scholarships in the range of $1000-$1500 annually.  Fortunately, the total contributions from all of you was just shy of $30,000!  $25,000 was used to create the endowment, and the remaining $4800 will be used over the next two years to continue providing scholarships until 2022 when the endowment begins providing scholarships.

Though we have met the goal of endowing the scholarships, you may continue to support the scholarship. Future contributions will go directly into the endowment and increase the amount of the annual scholarships. Donations can be submitted through the "Give Online" link on the following website:  If using this website, please ensure that you give to an "Other Fund Not Listed" and type "Symons & Tomai Memorial Scholarship" into the box.

Thank you all again for your continued support and the love that I know was behind each and every donation. I wish you all the merriest of holidays this December knowing that we ended 2019 with an incredibly significant accomplishment!

On behalf of the Kappa Phi chapter of Sigma Chi,

Sincerely and forever grateful,

Chester Peyton

**I apologize that you may receive this message more than once as I am aiming to send this update to donors across multiple years. Thank you for your understanding**

Where We Go From Here

September 24, 2016

The Sigma Chi Symons and Tomai Memorial Scholarship is established and well on its way to reaching an endowed status within 5 years thanks to your donations and continued support!

The initial crowdfunding initiative allowed the fund to exceed all of its short term goals and we have a great head start in achieving the long term goal!

  1. Establish a term scholarship fund (minimum $3500) - Accomplished in under 3 days
  2. Achieve our annual goal ($5K) - Accomplished in 10 days
  3. Establish an endowed fund in 5 years (min $25K) - 39% complete/85% above anticipated balance.

The next 365 days:

Still accepting donations through the ERAU Annual Giving website (copy and paste into your web browser):

Ensure your donation goes to the correct fund.

  1. Select "Choose Your Gift", a pop up menu will appear, scroll all the way to the bottom and select "Other Fund Not Listed"
  2. Type "Sigma Chi Symons-Tomai Memorial Scholarship" in "Other Fund (If Not Listed in Above Menu)"

Along with family, Sigma Chi alumni, and ERAU Alumni donations, we intend to approach local Prescott organizations/businesses and other companies that employ many ERAU and ERAU Sigma Chi alumni.  If your business is interested in providing a donation, please feel free to have them contact the Embry-Riddle Annual Giving office at (800) 362-9285 or Chester Peyton at (832) 752-8331.

I cannot thank you enough for your role in establishing this scholarship.  While this will aid so many students and Sigma Chis in the future, we continue to honor the contributions of Christopher Symons, Michael Tomai and the many men and women in the chapter's history that have made the Kappa Phi chapter so successful.

In Hoc Signo Vinces,

Chester Peyton

Final Stretch!

September 11, 2016

We are heading into the last week of giving with only 10 days remaining!

The efforts, support, and contributions that all of you have continued to provide have put us 150% OVER our initial goal of establishing the Memorial Scholarship Fund for Christopher and Michael.  The current balance we have established is certainly making the road easier in achieving our long-term goal of establishing an endowed scholarship.

Please continue to remind any additional brothers, family, and friends expressing interest in contributing that there are only 10 days left to contribute through the crowdfunding website.

Thank you all again for everything you have done to get us this far in only 35 days!

Only 3 Weeks Left!

September 02, 2016

I cannot thank you all enough for the support and donations!  The Symons & Tomai Memorial Scholarship is established!  We have more than exceeded our annual goal and are well ahead of our 5 year timeline.  But we still have 20 days left, so I know we can keep getting closer to the 5-year goal of $25K before the window closes this year!

Thank you again for your donation!

Sigma Chi Memorial Scholarships Highlighted in Lift Magazine!

August 25, 2016

In the Fall 2016 ERAU Lift magazine for alumni, the efforts of Sigma Chis from the Kappa Phi chapter on the Prescott campus as well as from the Eta Iota chapter at the Daytona Beach chapter were captured in an article titled "Band of Brothers."  The article takes the time to recognize some of the Embry-Riddle Sigma Chi brothers that have passed away while highlighting the memorial scholarships that have been established at both campuses.  Please take the time to read it at the link posted below:

We are continuing to make gains thanks to continued donations from this past week.  Lets keep this momentum going!  Thanks!

Annual Goal Met!

August 19, 2016

Wow!  Thanks to everyone who donated in the past two weeks and just made our annual goal happen! The website is still up for another 34 days, so please encourage anyone who planned to donate to still contribute.  Any amount above our annual goal gets us that much closer to our long term goal of an endowed scholarship (minimum balance $25K) and will be used to begin providing financial aid to brothers as early as the upcoming Spring semester!

Thank you again to all the brothers, families and friends!  This would not have come even remotely close if it wasn't for your continued support.

In hoc,

Chester Peyton

We are almost there!

August 18, 2016

Thank you so much for donating!  We hit our initial goal of establishing this scholarship in less than 3 days and we are SO close to reaching our annual goal of $5,000!

With the donations and the additional support so many of you have given (kind words of encouragement, reaching out to other friends and family), I know we will be able to achieve our long term goal of building this to an endowed scholarship earlier than our target date of 5 years.

If you know of anyone else who plans to contribute, please remind them that we only have 35 days remaining before the website closes.  Thank you again for the donation and support!

In Hoc Signo Vinces,

Minimum balance to establish the scholarship attained in less than 72 hours!

August 11, 2016

Thanks to all the brothers, families, and friends that have donated!  In less than 72 hours we were able to meet our goal of reaching the minimum balance to establish this scholarship!  Lets keep this ball rolling as we work to reach our annual goal of $5K with the long term goal of $25K just beyond the corner.  Please remind our other brothers that this site will only be up for 42 more days and not to miss out on the window for donations.  Thanks again for the immediate support, we are almost there!!!

When an undergraduate seeks to join the chapter, he will receive a bid from the active members of the fraternity, allowing the potential member to pledge a commitment to the Sigma Chi fraternity.
