The Report Is In

February 24, 2017

Hello Everyone,

On Wednesday, February 22nd at 11:45 PM we officially submitted our technical report to the AIAA Design/Build/Fly competition. The whole team was relieved that after several weeks of non-stop writing and editing we were finally done with the report and proud of it too. Both Dr. Leishman and Dr. Gonzalez gave our report a final Thumbs Up on Wednesday with confidence that we will do well. All of our Lightning II and up donors are listed on the second page of the report under Acknowledgements. While we can't release the full report to you just yet, we can release the first two pages without risk of compromising our design. We plan to release the full report a week prior to competition.

Now that the report is complete our main focus will be perfecting our competition plane, designing, building and testing new iterations all the way up until competition in April. Thank you all for your support and helping us get to this point. We'll keep you all updated as we progress.

As always, a special Thank You to our Lightning II and up donors:

We Did It

December 12, 2016

Hello Everyone,

I am ecstatic to announce that we have officially met, and exceeded, our goal of raising $9000 to send the Embry-Riddle Design/Build/Fly team to competition in Tucson Arizona this coming April! We cannot thank you all enough for your continued support.

The laser cutter is here and is setup in the lab. We are now just finalizing the safe operating procedures for our new piece of equipment. Once we get the laser cutter up and running, both our efficiency and quality will increase by an order of magnitude. We plan to start manufacturing the second iteration of the plane when we return for the Spring semester in January.

As the semester winds to a close and all of us cram for finals, I take a minute to look back at all we've accomplished this semester. We started off the year strong, our manufacturing team building a test plane and teaching the newest members the tricks of the trade. Our design team worked day and night to stay on schedule, get us the best plane they could, and lay more groundwork for future Design/Build/Fly teams. The week before thanksgiving the design was ready, and the manufacturing team spent four days straight slaving over the plane, and the results were worth it. That Sunday we met our goal of flying before thanksgiving, and it passed every test with flying colors. Looking back, it's easy to say we've accomplished a lot, and I feel safe saying we've got a good shot of winning this time around. And thanks to all of you, we can go the rest of the way.

On behalf of the Embry-Riddle Design/Build/Fly team, thank you for your support. We'll keep you updated as we continue on our way to competition this April. But until then, have a happy holidays, and a Happy New Year.

The Final Stretch

December 07, 2016

Hello Everyone,

First of all, I hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving. We are now in the final week of our crowdfunding campaign to send the ERAU Design/Build/Fly team to competition in Tucson Arizona this April. Over the last two weeks the manufacturing team has finally had time to breath and catch up on school work as the semester draws to a close. Our design team has been working to perfect the second iteration of the plane that we will start building when we return for the Spring Semester.

Seeing as this is the last week of the crowdfunding campaign we have a special announcement. During the last week of the crowdfunding campaign a new, Maverick Level perk will be added for those few that donate $1000 or greater will receive a scale, 3D printed replica of our final competition plane.

In other news, the laser cutter has at last arrived. Although it arrived too late for us to use this semester our manufacturing team will spend time over the Christmas break to learn how to use it, so that we can have it ready for the second iteration. I myself will be spending time after finals to learn how to write the G-Code to run the laser cutter so that we can start manufacturing as soon as possible.

On behalf of the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach Design/Build/Fly Team, thank you all for your continued support.

We Have Liftoff

November 22, 2016

Hello Everyone,

The last week has been a blur of balsa wood, CA glue and sand paper as the manufacturing team worked to meet our rather insane deadline of having a plane flight ready by Sunday the 20th (five days after getting the design), as per the request of our team budget manager Trevor Perrott. Thanks Trevor. To put it lightly, we had a big order to fill, but amazingly the manufacturing team pulled through. With limited parts (some merely substitutes for the real parts that had yet to come in), and no machining capabilities, we managed to constructed a competition ready plane in only four days.

Along the way the results of the proposal submissions to this years AIAA Design/Build/Fly competition were released. We are proud to say that our proposal placed 7th out of 138 teams world wide, beating teams such as Georgia Tech and MIT. A fantastic start for this years competition.

At noon on Sunday the 20th, the team headed out to test fly the first iteration of the Puckmaster 3000. After weighing the plane and running a full set of systems test, we were ready for our first test flight. Everyone was nervous when Andy threw the plane for the first time, but to our delight it took off without issue. We flew a total of four times that day, running both fully loaded and unloaded flight tests and speed runs of the plane, and figuring out what issues we'd like to fix in the next iteration. Overall the tests were an unprecedented success, showing our plane could fulfill all of its design requirements, and even safely recover from a motor failure. The plane was stable in flight and we know what to improve in our next iteration.

Over the Thanksgiving break the team will be celebrate their success as we look to the future and tweak our design to improve it, inspired with the knowledge that our design works and that our next iteration will perform even better.

Thank you all for your continued support and on behalf of the ERAU Design/Build/Fly Team, I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.

Manufacturing Has Begun

November 16, 2016

Hello everyone,

A lot of exciting things have happened over the last week. To start with, last Thursday our Design Team had their official Detailed Design Review with the AE professors here at the school, and passed with flying colors. Our design has received the seal of approval from our professors, and has moved on to the iterative process of manufacturing.

Over the weekend the manufacturing team was given the official design for iteration one of the Puckmaster 3000. As we speak the entire design team is working feverishly to get iteration one fabricated and flight ready by this Sunday. Talk about a tight schedule.

Alongside the first iteration of our competition aircraft, the test plane built by the newest members of the Design/Build/Fly team is ready to fly.

Thank you all for your continued support this great undertaking of ours.

Test Airplane Almost Complete

November 07, 2016

Hello Everyone,

Over the past week, while the design team was finishing details on our plane design, the manufacturing team has almost completed it's first test build of an airplane. This plane was built solely by new members, to teach them the tricks of the trade to building a good airplane. As we speak the design team is getting ready to send the first iteration of The Puck Master 3000 to our manufacturing leads so that we can have a test flight before Thanksgiving.

Some other great news, the COE's new laser cutter, which we have been hoping for, has been approved by the Chancellor for purchase. Once it gets here it will improve both our manufacturing time and quality by several orders of magnitude.

Thank you all for your continued support this great undertaking of ours.
